At the UChicago Space Program, we are dedicated to advancing space science while simultaneously enriching our community through outreach initiatives, ranging from workshops to seminars to hands-on activities. UChicago Research Symposium

Two groups of PULSE-A members presented at the 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium hosted by the UChicago College Center for Research and Fellowships. Seth Knights, Vincent Redwine, and Graydon Schulze-Kalt, presented on the Optical Payload and the mission ConOps. Logan Hanssler, Juan Prieto, and Alex Dennis, presented on the Optical Ground Station.

UCW Campus STEAM Carnival

On April 18th, members of UCSP hosted a booth at the Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter Schools. There, we presented and engaged with 6th-12th grade students about the various aspects of PULSE-A’s mission, engaging with students to familiarize and inspire them towards considering STEAM education.

UCSP x RAS Observation Night

UCSP collaborated with the Ryerson Astronomical Society to host an observation night during Parent's weekend when friends and family of UChicago were on campus.

Speaker Series - Dr. Michael Lembeck

Dr. Michael Lembeck delivered an engaging talk on his career to 50 attendees, sharing insights from his aerospace experience. He emphasized resilience, continuous learning, and collaboration for success, outlining key milestones, challenges, and triumphs. Dr. Lembeck encouraged attendees to view failure as a catalyst for innovation and to stay curious in their careers. The Q&A session sparked thoughtful discussions, and he offered tailored guidance on networking, skill development, and mentorship. His pragmatic approach inspired the audience to pursue their aspirations in the space domain with renewed dedication, highlighting the value of experience and knowledge sharing in shaping future aerospace professionals.

UCSP x La Universidad del Valle Guatemala

Maya Shah McDaniel, Optical Lead of PULSE-A, discussed optical communications and their applications in space exploration. She highlighted improvements in data transmission over radio frequency methods, noting higher data rates and bandwidth efficiency. Maya also addressed challenges such as atmospheric interference and system alignment, stressing ongoing research for reliable communication in future missions.
